'We must be positive to fight back' - Glock

02 September 2009

Timo Glock has confidence in the Toyota team and believes that it can move forward in Italy next weekend. The Japanese outfit is currently involved in a battle with Ferrari and McLaren for third overall in the championship although the inconsistency of the TF109's performances remains to some extent a mystery.

Having locked out the front row with Jarno Trulli and Glock in Bahrain, both Toyotas lined up on the back of the grid in Monaco. Poor performances in Valencia then contrasted with a second place grid slot for Trulli in Belgium last weekend; it is contrasts in form such as these which have left both the drivers and team engineers pondering their situation this year.

"We thought Spa should suit us but after Valencia, when we didn't really understand why qualifying was so disappointing, it was difficult to make any predictions," Timo explained. "From the start of practice the car felt strong and that gave us confidence because it was clear we were more competitive than in Valencia. Immediately before qualifying we were quite optimistic so it wasn't a big surprise to see Jarno and myself fighting towards the front."

Unfortunately, the team was unable to capitalise on its grid positions of 2nd and 7th at Spa as Trulli retired in the pit lane after a refuelling problem and Timo also lost time during a pit-stop. "Unfortunately the fuel rig didn't engage properly so the guys had to switch to the back-up," Glock explained. "They did a really good job to make the change so quickly but it still cost us a few seconds; that caused me to come out in a bit of traffic so I lost a little more time and that was basically where we lost the chance for points."

With Ferrari currently third in the Constructors' championship with 56 points, McLaren trails by 12 with Toyota a further 5.5 in arrears. "I am quite encouraged by some aspects of the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, particularly the significant improvement in qualifying pace," Glock continued. "We had a bit of bad luck in the race which prevented us from getting a good result but we must be positive and ready to fight back at Monza.

"It is another high-speed, low-downforce circuit so hopefully we can be strong, although the field is so close at the moment it's not easy to predict what will happen."
