Vitantonio Liuzzi's afternoon at Monza came to an unfortunate early end when the Italian pulled off the circuit at the Roggia chicane. Having rejoined Formula One this weekend for the first time for nearly two years, the 28-year-old qualified an impressive seventh on Saturday before losing a chance of points on Sunday.
The Italian's last F1 appearance was at the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix for Toro Rosso before moving to Force India as test and reserve driver last year. Helping Adrian Sutil confirm that the Mercedes-powered cars are running very much on leading pace now, the Italian missed out on a finish through no fault of his own.
"Finally, I am racing again and I gave it one-hundred percent," he said after the final European race of the season at Monza. "We didn't make any mistakes and everything was perfect until we were in a great position but that's racing, unfortunately.
"I had an unusual problem; the transmission started making a strange noise and then I lost drive and couldn't push - that's racing it was just a shame, as we haven't had a reliability problem until now, but that's how it is. We won't give up, though, until the end of the season - we want to get lots of points and I am sure we will make it."
