'Singapore should favour KERS' - Kovalainen

19 September 2009

Although it may be a well-known cocktail, the only 'Singapore Sling' Heikki Kovalainen is looking forward to comes in the shape of his Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS). The Finn believes that the nature of the Marina Bay circuit, with both tight corners and long straights, should suit the McLaren's added tool.

KERS functions by making use of the otherwise wasted kinetic (movement) energy travelling within the car during braking to store and subsequently deploy in the form of an 80 horsepower boost for 6.6 seconds per lap. With Singapore's many bends ideal for the charging of the device, Kovalainen looks forward to the event.

"We really seem to have discovered the sweet-spot of this year's car," he said. "I've had points finishes in every race since the Nürburgring and we've got some interesting new upgrades in the system that are planned for the Singapore race. Of course, racing at night is what really makes this event unique but the lighting system is so fantastic that you tend to forget that you are even racing in the dark!

"Singapore is the sort of circuit that should suit our package - there are lots of slower corners and we'll be able to use KERS to our advantage. Overall, the city is also a fantastic backdrop to what has already become one of the best circuits on the Formula One calendar."
