Flavio Briatore's position as joint owner of the Queens Park Rangers (QPR) football club is being investigated by the Football League in the wake of his lifetime ban from Formula One. The Italian is currently one of three owners of the Loftus Road club, with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone being another.
Having been banned from Formula One as well as all other FIA motorsport championships for an unlimited period of time, the Italian is now subject to a direct violation of the League's 'fit and proper person test', which states that a club owner should never be associated with 'a ban from a sports governing body relating to the administration of their sport'.
"The Football League chairman, Lord Mawhinney, has written to the FIA to request further details of its decision," a spokesman for the Football League explained. "Thereafter, the League will consider its position on the matter."
Along with F1 commercial rights holder Ecclestone, QPR ownership is also shared with steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal; reports suggest that the latter may now buy Briatore's share of the club.
