Singapore Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton believes compatriot Jenson Button stands a great chance of being crowned World Champion for the first time this season. .However, due to past experiences of his own, the current title holder recommends the Brawn driver to avoiding coasting until the achievement is done and dusted.

Having entered Formula One two seasons ago, Hamilton came mighty close to winning the Drivers' title in his first season of competition but lost out by a single point to the Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen.

"He's done a good job winning six races, which is good for him and the team," McLaren's Hamilton said of Button in Singapore. "but don't forget that I was leading (eventual Champion Kimi Räikkönen) by 17 points with two races to go in 2007 and lost it - so it'll be very, very tough, right to the last moment.

"I suggest he just keeps pushing to the last race and to see how it goes but I wish him all the best." Overall victory for Button would confirm successive British Champions for the first time in three decades.

Recent championship-leading margins with 3 rounds remaining:

2008: 7 points, Lewis Hamilton leading Felipe Massa

2007: 2 points, Lewis Hamilton leading Fernando Alonso

2006: 2 points, Fernando Alonso leading Michael Schumacher

2005: 25 points, Fernando Alonso leading Kimi Räikkönen

2003: 1 point, Michael Schumacher leading Juan-Pablo Montoya

2000: 2 points, Mika Häkkinen leading Michael Schumacher

Note: During other seasons in this decade (2001, 2002 and 2004) the championship had already been won before the final trio of Grands Prix
