Vettel aiming for poles and wins

28 September 2009

Sebastian Vettel is now the only man who can deny a Brawn driver the World Championship crown this season. With a crash having ended team-mate Mark Webber's challenge in Singapore on Sunday, Red Bull's Vettel is aiming for the top spot in all remaining qualifying sessions and races.

With Suzuka, Interlagos and Yas Marina still to visit, pressure is mounting on Vettel to maintain a small enough margin to championship leader Jenson Button; such is the gap that, with three Grands Prix still to go, the German must finish in the top three this weekend in order to mathematically retain an opportunity.

"I think history has shown many different examples of how it can finish over the years, with it going either way," Vettel told reporters after the weekend's night race in Marina Bay. "At the next races our approach will be simple; to try and get pole position and race wins - so it's very straightforward."

However, Vettel's Japanese task is not an easy one as he requires some bad luck for championship leader Jenson Button as well as a podium finish for himself.

How Sebastian Vettel can stay in the hunt at Suzuka:

- by finishing 1st with Button 5th or lower
- by finishing 2nd with Button 7th or lower
- by finishing 3rd with Button 9th or lower
