Ecclestone voted against Briatore ban

Ecclestone voted against Briatore ban

29 September 2009

FIA President Max Mosley has spoken briefly regarding Bernie Ecclestone's position towards former Renault team Managing Director Flavio Briatore. The F1 commercial rights holder was one of few who, last Monday, voted against the Italian receiving a lifelong banishing from the sport.

With Briatore having been accused as one of creators of the scheme which saw Nelson Piquet Jr. crash on purpose in last year's Singapore Grand Prix, Ecclestone attended the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) hearing in Paris as a member of the board.

"The council did not vote unanimously," Mosley said in an interview with the London Evening Standard. "All 26 members were not there, the figure was 20, and there were proxies. A substantial majority were in favour of punishing Briatore but Bernie was in a minority."

Ecclestone, as well as owning the CVC Capital Partners company - which holds the rights to Formula One - shares ownership of Queens Park Rangers (QPR) football club with Briatore; the Italian stands to lose this role too, however, as Football League rules state that no club owner should be associated with a ban from any sporting governing body.
