KERS needs development, says Tost

Common opinion in the paddock and within the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) is that 2010 will see Formula One cars without the KERS device. Although there has been evidence to the contrary, Toro Rosso Team Principal Franz Tost has his own vision for the future of the system.

Tost's vision for the power-boosting device includes a period of development before a proposed reintroduction in 2013 along with a new specification engine and gearbox. The former racing driver also suggests that "For the smaller teams it should be offered as part of the drive train at a reasonable price."

The Austrian went on to explain the environmental factors hindering KERS at present. "I am all for the use of KERS in the long run but it should be planned better in terms of costs and in terms of environmental friendliness," he began. "Environmental friendliness means that it does not make sense if a KERS system is in use when you have to get rid of the batteries after every race - that cannot be it."

However, question marks remain over the device as Ferrari and McLaren continue to use the system at race weekends. The Williams team also continues to develop their unique flywheel system, having not been part of FOTA when the decision to abandon KERS was made. FIA technical regulations continue to fully permit its use.
