It was a short-lived qualifying session for local favourite Kazuki Nakajima at Suzuka. The Williams driver was eliminated from qualifying at the earliest possible stage in Q1 and will start Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix from 17th position.
Having been one of two Japanese drivers on Friday, as Kamui Kobayashi substituted for Timo Glock at Toyota, Nakajima returned to his role as Japan's sole representative on Saturday.
"Very disappointed, yesterday was a good day," Wiliams' Kazuki said on returning to the paddock. "Today in the dry it's not a good result, it's a shame - it was a bit of both, car and driver, but my team-mate was a lot quicker."
