Williams' reasons for 14 teams disagreement

Williams' reasons for 14 teams disagreement

With word having circulated the Singapore Grand Prix paddock over the matter, Sir Frank Williams has spoken out over the FIA's request to enter a fourteenth team next season. With BMW Sauber having been sold to the Swiss Qadbak company, it now requires mutual consent to enter from all other teams plus the governing body.

With the FIA in agreement that the newly-owned Hinwil outfit should be able to make the grid, the 13 entered teams must also agree to the exception of the regulation. The Grove-based team, however, is not so sure. "There should only be 13 teams, that's what there always has been," team owner Sir Frank Williams told Reuters.

"I would suggest they apply to be first reserve, that's the logical thing to do; it's illogical to change the rules suddenly for one extra person and they may have a chance of getting in (as reserves) based on the gossip that's going around."

The Englishman's comments confirm the difficulty of being on the starting grid for Qadbak, although Williams explained the reasons for his opinion. "If this was Ferrari (who had) somehow retired halfway through a year and wanted to come back, we'd find a way to bend the rules," he said.

"But this is a team that is owned by someone; we don't know who they are, their long-term plans...we're not at all happy until we know who the owners are and their long-term plans - we would like to know." On top of this, current BMW driver Nick Heidfeld explained to the BBC in Singapore that he also awaits contact from investments firm Qadbak.
