Briatore awaiting football fate

Briatore awaiting football fate

A Football League meeting in the United Kingdom on Thursday is set to decide the fortune of former Renault Managing Director Flavio Briatore. The Italian, joint owner of Queens Park Rangers (QPR), faces the loss of the position after being banned for life by Formula One governing body the FIA.

With Briatore having been permanently expelled from F1 for his part in the highly controversial 'Crashgate' race-fixing scandal, Football League regulations state that any individual to have been banned by a sporting body must be investigated, with a similar punishment being a possible consequence.

"We have a board meeting and have at least a couple of fit-and-proper person issues which we will address," Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney is quoted as saying by The Times. "I would like to come out of the board meeting with settled policies in general terms which we can apply to future cases that need to be addressed. I understand what is being said and we will reflect on that as a board."

Briatore shares ownership of QPR with Indian steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal and England's Bernie Ecclestone, head of Formula One Management (FOM), commercial rights holder for the sport.
