Former Renault head Sage dies

10 October 2009

Jean Sage, the man who ran the Renault team when it first moved into Formula One, has passed away at the age of 68. The Frenchman, previously a rally co-driver as well as a racer himself in Formula 3 and sports cars, led the diamond marque into F1 in the late 1970s.

Before clinching a first Grand Prix victory with Jean-Pierre Jabouille at the memorable 1979 French Grand Prix at Dijon, Renault first entered F1 with its turbo engines in 1977.

Sage also helped Jabouille to the European Formula 2 title in 1976 before he moved into F1 alongside Alain Prost, an eventual quadruple World Champion for McLaren and Williams.

Sage remained with Renault for another two years after the company pulled out of Formula One before leaving the company in 1987.
