More damage limitation for BMW

Mario Theissen has admitted that the final two Grands Prix of 2009 will be all about making the best of a bad situation as BMW prepares to bow out of Formula One. The German marque will leave the sport at the end of the year, leaving the Hinwil team in a difficult position.

With the outfit having been sold to investments firm Qadbak, the Swiss company is likely to struggle to join the grid as - with all teams needing to agree for a 14th to be made legal - Williams and Campos have denied the admission.

"While in 2008 the BMW Sauber F1 Team was still in contention for both World Championship titles up to the penultimate race of the season, in 2009 it's a case of making the best of the situation and taking away as many points as we can," Team Principal Theissen said.

"The results of the recent Grands Prix show that our development work is bearing fruit: we made it into the points in five consecutive races. Nevertheless, in Singapore and in Japan we fell short of our potential."
