'Time for a much quieter life' - Max Mosley

15 October 2009

Max Mosley has written his final letter to the leaders and members of FIA bodies in various countries as he prepares to move into his final week in the role of the governing body's President. Next Friday, elections will take place to decide whether Jean Todt or Ari Vatanan becomes the Englishman's successor.

Since taking over as FIA President from Jean-Marie Balestre in 1993, Max Mosley has dealt with numerous problems and introduced various initiatives on both safety and financial fronts, many of which he addressed in his letter this week.

The 69-year-old began by talking of the tragic deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna early in the 1994 season and how the sad events led to a major overhaul of safety, both on the race track and on public roads. Mosley described how measures such as the Head And Neck Support (HANS) device have since helped to save lives in crashes such as the numerous incidents at Suzuka two weekends ago.

In the closing part of the message, Mosley admitted that leading the FIA is a 'challenging role', having dealt with such cases as the Ferrari-McLaren 'Spygate' situation of 2007 and the more recent Renault 'Crashgate' race-fixing saga. Max does feel, however, that the majority of his initiatives have yielded positive outcomes in motorsport despite understanding that satisfying all is often an impossible task.

The final lines of Max Mosley's last letter as FIA President read as follows:

'I wish my successor and his entire team the very best for the future. I hope in a modest way through membership of the Senate and the Foundation to continue to stay in touch with the clubs and with the new leadership of the FIA. But I will only offer advice if specifically asked to do so. The time has now come for me to step back and enjoy a much quieter life.

With my very sincere thanks to you all

Max Mosley.'
