Barrichello yearning for home win

16 October 2009

During his time at Ferrari, Rubens Barrichello vowed never to retire from Grand Prix racing until a home win in Brazil was under his belt. Having not had a realistic chance since 2004, the local hero returns to Interlagos as a championship and potentially race-winning contender this weekend.

Ironically, despite his many years of trying, Barrichello's quest to become the first Brazilian victor of his home Grand Prix since Ayrton Senna was over in 2006 when Felipe Massa crossed the finish line first for Ferrari. Ahead of the penultimate race of 2009, however, Barrichello must finish at least 4th - assuming team-mate Jenson Button does not score - in order to keep his hopes alive.

"It has been a long road coming to Brazil and feeling the pressure but learning, more than anything, how to deal with it and changing to get that positive energy and just using that to your advantage," Rubens explained at the São Paulo track on Thursday.

"I feel so great to be here. It's really nice and for me it's a winning year already. I put my hands into the sky to thank the car I have, the wins I have and for a chance I have to win in Brazil - something which I have been dreaming of for a long, long time - so hopefully the car will be back to the performance that we wish.

"The second part of the season has been a little tough in terms of getting the performance, especially because the Red Bulls and some other cars are going quite fast, but hopefully here I can just put everything out and go for the win as I need it…and because I want it so badly."
