Brazil: Party time…or not?

16 October 2009

The Brazilian Grand Prix marks Round 16 of 17 in the 2009 Formula One World Championship. The weekend in São Paulo could also be the one on which Jenson Button and his Brawn GP team seal both the Drivers' and Constructors' titles although anything can happen at Interlagos…

With Button being able to score a podium position to confirm his first Formula One title, the pressure is somewhat off the Englishman, who can in fact wrap up the crown without finishing either of the final two races.

Team-mate Rubens Barrichello, on the other hand, must come home at least 4th in his home city to keep his hopes alive. Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel requires 2nd place if he wishes to continue the fight in Abu Dhabi in a fortnight's time.

Brackley-based Brawn GP's job of winning the Constructors' Championship in its first season - an unparalleled achievement in the sport, barring the inaugural campaign of 1950 - is far simpler; one more point would be enough, with Red Bull Racing needing to finish 1-2 with Brawn out of the top eight in both Brazil and Abu Dhabi to take the trophy to Milton Keynes.

However, the Interlagos circuit is known to throw up a number of surprises and heavy rain has already been forecast for all three days of the race weekend, which kicks off with Free Practice on Friday.

How Jenson Button can win the Drivers' title in Brazil:

- by finishing 1st
- by finishing 2nd
- by finishing 3rd
- by finishing 4th with Barrichello 2nd or lower
- by finishing 5th with Barrichello 2nd or lower
- by finishing 6th with Barrichello 3rd or lower and Vettel 2nd or lower
- by finishing 7th with Barrichello 3rd or lower and Vettel 2nd or lower
- by finishing 8th with Barrichello 4th or lower and Vettel 3rd or lower
- by not scoring with Barrichello 5th or lower and Vettel 3rd or lower

How Red Bull can still beat Brawn to the Constructors' title:

- by finishing 1st and 2nd in Brazil and Abu Dhabi with the Brawn cars not scoring in either race
