Smaller team an advantage, says Button

19 October 2009

Due to regulation changes, new World Champion Jenson Button believes that the size of his Brawn team will be a benefit in 2010. Also on Monday, the British media is reporting that the Englishman is now searching for an increase in salary size heading into his season of title defence.

The Englishman took a £5m pay cut to £3m at the cash-strapped Brawn team in 2009 but is now believed to be searching for a revert to £8m. Button's title collection on Sunday strangely bears a number of similarities to that of Lewis Hamilton last year; not only does the achievement mark a first world title collection for an Englishman in Brazil but Jenson also finished fifth in car number 22.

"I want to be here next year and I want to be with a team that can challenge for victories, like this season," Button said in his Champion's solo press conference later in the afternoon at Interlagos. "Brawn can do that. These guys are not one-hit wonders; we have some sensationally talented people in our team - we might not be big, like other teams, but that will be a benefit to us next season as the teams have to get smaller and we have the right amount of people for next year."

Aware of his detractors, Button put his triumph into perspective. "It's great to be sat here as World Champion and I personally think I thoroughly deserve it," he smiled. "I've been the best over 16 races and that's what world titles are all about.

"I am it. I am a World Champion. And I'm going to keep saying it, especially after a race that, for me, was the best I've driven in my life."
