'Williams decides against Renault engines'

19 October 2009

It is believed that the Williams team has elected not to repeat history by returning to the use of Renault engines for next year. It was publically known that the Grove outfit was considering the French powerplants for 2010 although a return to Cosworth power now looks more likely.

According to Autosport on Monday, the Williams team will be reverting to Cosworth engines for next season. Having run with Toyota powerplants for three seasons following the Formula One departure of the British company at the end of 2006, a confirmed deal would see ten cars on the grid being powered by Cosworth next year.

With F1's four new teams - Campos, Manor, Lotus and USF1 - all having confirmed that Cosworth will be powering them in 2010, a Williams return to the legendary brand name would mean the team switches back to the engine company which it last used three years ago following the Grove outfit's split with long-term partner BMW.

Cosworth's own return to the field sees it re-enter the sport as the standard engine, having won the tender from governing body the FIA, and so it is the most likely contender for Williams which has already confirmed that its three-year partnership with Toyota is coming to an end.
