Football League biding time with Briatore

Football League biding time with Briatore

20 October 2009

The Football League in the United Kingdom has revealed that it will take no action regarding Flavio Briatore until discovering the outcome of the Italian's November court hearing. The former Renault team boss, who is a co-owner of Queens Park Rangers (QPR), is also facing a ban from football.

With Italian Briatore having been permanently expelled from Formula One - and any other FIA motorsport championship - for his part in the race-fixing controversy of Singapore last year, the Football League's 'Fit and proper person' rules state than a ban on any individual (from any sporting body) could result in the same punishment being imposed.

With Briatore having visited a Paris court on Monday, it has been revealed that a formal hearing to overturn the FIA ban has been organised for Tuesday 24 November. Until then, the Football League will be taking no action towards the QPR man.

'The Football League has noted the decision by Queens Park Rangers director Flavio Briatore to commence legal proceedings against the FIA in the French Courts,' a Football League statement reads on Tuesday.

'Lord Mawhinney, Chairman of the Football League, met with Mr Briatore on Friday, where they discussed the recent decision of the World Motor Sport Council. Mr Briatore informed Lord Mawhinney of his intention to take legal action against the FIA.

The Football League will now await the Court decision before taking any further action.'
