'Silverstone's for the taking' - Ecclestone on British GP

27 October 2009

Bernie Ecclestone has been quoted as saying that Silverstone is freely able to hold on to the British Grand Prix for future years, providing that Donington Park fails to host the event and a straightforward deal can be signed.

With Eurosport reporting that the financial deadline for Leicestershire's Donington was in fact 12 midnight on Tuesday as opposed to 12 noon on Monday, Formula One commercial rights holder Ecclestone has confirmed that Silverstone could soon find itself in a position to host the race again, as long as it agrees to his terms.

"Silverstone have a contract on their table," he said. "All they have to do is sign it, get it back to me and the race could be theirs on Tuesday if things fall over with Donington."

However, with Silverstone owned by the private BRDC (British Racing Drivers' Club), it is believed that a fee of £12m per annum would continue to rise by seven percent for each year of the 17-year agreement - something the club is unlikely to agree with.
