Ekström beats Schumacher for Race of Champions
04 November 2009 / PhotosTwo-time DTM Champion Mattias Ekström has beaten Michael Schumacher to clinch his third Race of Champions victory on Wednesday. Having also triumphed in 2006 and 2007, the Swede's 2009 success confirms that he has won at all three different venues of the event's recent years.
With 7-time F1 World Champion Schumacher and 2009 runner-up Sebastian Vettel having won the Nations Cup together on Tuesday, the likes of the latter and current World Champion Jenson Button had both been eliminated to allow a Swedish/German final in the main event on Wednesday.
After winning the first of three rounds in the final in China, Ekström stretched out enough of a lead to ensure the win was his in only the second encounter.
With the German gracious in defeat, claiming that one man was better than him today, Ekström has confirmed Race of Champions victories in Paris' Stade de France, London's Wembley Stadium and now Beijing's Bird's Nest Olympic Stadium.
